‘Faraway is Near at Hand in Images of Elsewhere’: A Poetic Journey across the History of Direction with Jerry Brotton

12 December 6:00 pm 2024

UPCOMING EVENT

Running in a single line along a wall on the south side of the tracks at Paddington station until its demolition in 1981, this piece of poetic graffiti captures so many aspects of imaginative literature, art – and maps. In this talk drawn from his latest book, Four Points of the Compass, Jerry Brotton takes us on a poetic journey across the history of direction – north and south, east and west – showing how north triumphed, and artists like Adam Dant point in different directions, by pursuing disorientation and inversion.
